As we watched the 2008 war in Georgia unfold before our eyes, we might as well wonder what historical process led to it. As such, historical committees are a unique opportunity to relive, rethink and, why not, rewrite history. This July, the SC will go back to 1993 and discuss the roots of a conflict that still poses threats to the stability of the Caucasian region.
The origins of the conflict regarding Abkhaz and Georgians can be found in the formation and consolidation of the Soviet Union following the Russian Revolution, and even far before that. However, the outbreak of the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict in 1992 is set in a stage where the Cold War had just come to an end and insecurity, more than ever before, came from within the state. The humanitarian condition in which the region encountered itself was appalling. As a whole, both Georgians and Abkhaz felt mutually threatened by one another within Abkhazia.
The UN already had a history of involvement within the conflict. The Security Council had already passed two Resolutions on the matter. Therefore, the purpose of this committee will be to further discuss the issue of Abkhazia. The sessions will take place in late August, 1993 and we are expecting delegates to focus on how to deal with a situation of threat to peace and security in the region.
